The South African Revenue Service (SARS) recently warned property owners who receive rental income from hosting fee-paying guests against their tax obligation. The tax collector emphasised that property owners who host fee-paying guests, and receive rental income, have the same obligation to declare such income to SARS, just as homeowners letting out their property. Although the legal position is fairly clear, it appears that SARS may have identified the need to focus on improving taxpayer compliance in the property sector, said Ursula Diale-Ali, an associate designate at legal firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr. “In particular, amongst property owners who derive rental income from hosting fee-paying guests, and therefore on an ad hoc basis, rather than property owners who enter into lease agreements for longer periods of time,” she said.
As global recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic continues, risk appetite is soaring – with the rand remaining one of the best performing currencies globally. The local currency rallied on positive global and domestic economic data last week, breaking R14.20/dollar on Thursday, levels which were last seen pre-pandemic. However, the upside was tapered by the country’s vaccine drive’s suspension amid safety concerns over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, said Nedbank economists in a research note on Monday (19 April). “Still, the local unit ended the week 1.9%, 1.2% and 1.3% stronger against the US dollar, the euro and the British pound, respectively. Over the past four weeks and on a year-to-date basis, the rand registered exceptional gains against the above currencies.”
The National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) have dismissed as a scam, reports of trillions of rands donor funds going missing – after being deposited at the central bank. The allegations were made by businessman and politician Tokyo Sexwale during an interview he had with eNCA on Sunday evening. During the interview with host JJ Tabane, Sexwale alleged that billions that have been deposited at the SARB, have gone missing. In a joint statement National Treasury and the SARB said the allegations point to a common scam. “Over the years, National Treasury and the SARB have received many such requests for, or promises, of billions (and now trillions) of rands or dollars, and from experience regard these as simply scams. Any claim that such funds are meant for deserving causes such as Covid-19 relief, social grants or grants for free education are simply empty promises, to secure the interest of the potential victim,” said the parties.
